Our Schedule, Part 2: Morning Message

Each morning, I write a message to my kids on a dry erase board. The purpose of the message is to greet the kids, and encourage them to read frequently used words with ease. Sometimes I use the message as a way to communicate upcoming events, the weather forecast, prayer requests or memory verses. Eventually, my first grader will fill in missing words, then write partial or complete messages himself. I'll allow him to use a word bank I've prepared if needed. I've found that this is a great way to start our day together! This strategy can be modified as an effective way to greet older children, too!

I've shared a sample "Morning Message" template with a word bank below.

Happy Home Schooling,
Mrs. Sherry

 Bumper Sticker Theology

While thumbing through a catalog called "The Country House" today, I saw a plaque that made me think back to a conversation I had some time ago while hosting a women's fellowship event at my house.

The discussion grew deeper after our group enjoyed dessert together. (There's something about chocolate that does that, isn't there?) One of the ladies, feeling discouraged, said something like, "I've always heard that 'God never gives us more than we can handle.' But, I feel like I've been given way more than I can handle. Where's God for me?"

Dear friends, that is what I call "bumper sticker theology." God's Word has not promised us ease. Here's just one example from Paul's life, as he was contemplating his own "thorn in the flesh:"

2 Corinthians 12:9-10: "But he (God) said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Today, if you're feeling discouraged, I challenge you to feel delighted. It's a hard shift in thinking, but in my own life, I've found contentment to be a matter of faith, not of circumstances.

Maybe you're thinking, "easier said than done."

Tell me, what's easy about worrying? What's easy about depression? What's easy about sin? What's easy about bad habits? What's easy about feeling stuck? What's easy about guilt, shame and misplaced blame? What's easy about trying to handle it all by yourself? What, dear friend, is easy about faithlessness?

No, faith is much "easier." I've lived both ways, so I can talk to you gently as one who's been there and done that.

So, maybe we should replace that old bumper sticker slogan with a saying on a plaque from "The Country House."

"God DOESN'T give us what we can handle; God helps us handle what we are given."

Stop trying to figure out why you are where you are. Stop trying to discern the reasoning behind God's plans and purposes. Stop trying to figure out who's at fault.

Start resting in God' precious promises. Start believing that God loves you. Start connecting with a church family who can hold you accountable, lift you up and share life with you.

You are the apple of his eye. Cast your cares on him, for he cares for you.

"I can do all things THROUGH Christ, who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13

I'd love for you to add more scripture or your own thoughts as comments to encourage others if you'd like.

Happy Home Schooling,
Mrs. Sherry

 Huckabee on Home Schooling

For a great video featuring Governor Mike Huckabee's position on home schooling, go to www.youtube.com and type in keywords "huckabee homeschooling" in the search box.

In just seven minutes, you'll hear why Governor Huckabee is the candidate of choice among home schoolers, and you'll see why he has been endorsed by the Home School Legal Defense Association.

For more of my personal thoughts and research on Mike Huckabee, visit my other blog, http://myvotecounts.blogstream.com. There's a link to that blog, and to www.mikehuckabee.com, to the right.

Dear Home School Solutions Friends,

"Vertical Day" is coming on Monday, September 24! It's a special day dedicated by Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign to lift up our great country by engaging in meaningful discussion and debate.

Visit my other blog, http://myvotecounts.blogstream.com (link to right) or go directly to www.mikehuckabee.com (link to right) to find out why Mike Huckabee is America's candidate...and why home schoolers and conservative parents should give him our full support in the days ahead.

More to come...

 Our School Schedule

Dear Home School Solutions Friends,

I think it's always interesting to read about how home school families structure their school days.

Below is our daily home school schedule. (I'll explain some of my terminology and list my curriculum in upcoming posts.) As much as possible, I lead both kids (pre-k and first) together in the same activities (sometimes making adaptations for age), except as noted. Also, if the kids are working really well, we don't always break for playtime or snack time exactly when noted. On the other hand, I'm flexible to break sooner if they're especially wiggly on a given day.

One thing I had to transition away from as a former classroom teacher was being tied to a clock. I've learned that I feel less anxious when I give myself the freedom to be flexible with time as a home schooler, so I don't ever list my schedule with time slots any more. That way, if we have a field trip, or we need to spend more or less time on a particular subject, I don't feel like we're falling behind. It's really just a little mind game I play with myself, and we get it all done eventually.

On an ideal day, the kids get up, get dressed, have breakfast and do morning chores. We start school around 9:00, and are finished with most everything by noon. We use afternoons to tie up loose ends or do special projects.

My husband listens to each child read each evening, and does a "spelling bee" on Thursday nights with my son to help him review for his Friday test. Both my husband and I read aloud to the kids every day; we read a mix of picture books and chapter books.

We do have a literature co-op every other Thursday morning, and so we don't do our phonics or language lessons on those days.

Happy Home Schooling!
Mrs. Sherry
