Dear Home School Solutions Friends,
Here are some fun ideas to spur your family toward thankfulness this season....
1. Place a handful of unpopped popcorn kernels (or candy corn) next to each person's place at Thanksgiving dinner. The corn serves as a reminder of that first Thanksgiving, and, for each piece of corn, each person may say one thing for which they're thankful. (Thank you to Jaci for sharing her family tradition!)
2. My kids love "Popcorn Prayer." Scoot your chairs back away from the table. Begin your prayer time with "Dear God." Then, go around the table and allow each person to pop up and say one thing for which they're thankful. When everyone has had a turn or two, everyone says "Amen" in chorus.
3. Make a list of things for which you're thankful using each letter of the alphabet as a prompt. This is great for pre-school and elementary students!
4. We use the Thanksliving Treasures activity box from Family Life to teach our kids about Thanksgiving each year. Go to the Family Life website for ordering information.
If you have other Thanksgiving traditions or ideas, I'd love for you to share them in the comments section below.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Mrs. Sherry
Put 5 kernels by each place setting. This was the Pilgrim's daily ration. Seeing that tiny bit of food by our heaping plates reminds us to be thankful not only for what we have now, but for the Pilgrim's who endured much hardship for the religious freedoms we have today.
Blessings,
Christine
Thanks for adding detail to the corn kernel idea in this post. I think that's the way my friend Jaci uses the corn kernels, actually. I always appreciate your contributions!
Blessings,
Sherry
