As the school year comes to a close and spring fever strikes, your family may need to take a break from the books. Earth Day, on April 22, is the perfect excuse to enjoy some sunshine. Below are five fun ways to celebrate God's creation on Earth Day in Des Moines.

1. Escape to a tropical destination right here in the heartland and visit the Des Moines Botanical Center. They're offering FREE ADMISSION on Earth Day!
2. Visit the Great Ape Trust of Iowa and get a rare view of how apes are trained, observed and protected in this premier facility.
3. Even on a rainy day, you can enjoy the indoor exhibits at the Blank Park Zoo. While you're there, be sure to ask a zoologist about how they recycle animal waste at the zoo. You'll be surprised!
4. Stop at Gray's Lake at 11:00 AM for a free lesson in bird watching from the Des Moines Parks and Rec Department. Remember to enjoy a picnic lunch packed in a reusable container while you're there!
5. Take your used pop cans to a local recycling center to redeem them for a nickel a piece. Decide as a family how you could use the money to help the environment. Blank Park Zoo has a fun place to make a donation with your coins just inside their lobby.
